Vladimir Varićak

Vladimir Varićak (1885–1942) – mathematician, born in Švica in 1865. He graduated in mathematics and physics at the present Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Zagreb (old Mudroslovni fakultet). He first worked as a high school teacher throughout Croatia, and in 1891 he obtained his doctorate at his home university in Zagreb. He was head of the Department of Mathematics from 1889 until 1942, and head of the Geometry Seminar from 1925 to 1928 at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. He was a member of HAZU (JAZU) from 1903, also a member of the Czech Academy of Sciences and SANU. He contributed materials for the Croatian encyclopedia. Non-Euclidean geometry and its implications to Einstein's theory of relativity were his own scientific interests. From 1909 to 1913, he wrote to Einstein on a regular basis. He was one of the first to introduce Ruđer Boković's work into the classroom, making a substantial contribution to the examination of Bošković's mathematical endeavors. His contributions to non-Euclidean geometry and the theory of relativity resonated strongly in the world of science, and his publications on the latter were frequently quoted. Vladimir Varićak was one of the top experts in Europe on Einstein's theory of relativity, a renowned physicist with an international reputation. The figure was made by academic sculptor Ljubo de Karina from Brseč.
