Borna – duke of Gačani

Borna – duke of Gačani. Prince Borna was a negatively depicted historical figure in Croatian historiography until the most recent era. This tendentious interpretation is changing in recent historiography, and with it Borna's role in the development of Croatian statehood. In the year 818, Borna is mentioned in the Frankish annals as dux Guduscanorum, i.e., as the Duke of Gačani. It is the oldest mention of the ethnonym Gačanin in history, albeit in a Latin derivative. A little later, Borna is mentioned as dux Dalmatiae, i.e., duke of Dalmatia, which obviously means that he expanded his power in the south, and finally in 821 he is mentioned as dux Dalmatiaeatque Liburniae, which means that he finally ruled Liburnia as well. Borna was the first Croatian prince who ruled a wider Croatian area from the Raša River in Istria to the Cetina River in the south and laid the foundations of the first medieval Croatian state. It was apparently chosen by the powerful Francia to establish a vassal power on the eastern coast of the Adriatic as a counterweight to the previous Byzantine power. In Heristall, he was received by the emperor Ludovic the Pious himself, together with the envoys from Gačani, which speaks of his position and power. Although there is no evidence, it is believed that he was baptized (although this cannot be claimed for all people). Borna was clearly up to the historical task and used the historical opportunity to find the medieval Croatian state. The figure was made by the academic sculptor Mate Čvrljak from Labin.
