Žikmund Frankopan

Žikmund Frankopan (1434–1486) – the last of the famous Frankopan family who ruled Otočac and Gacka. In 1466 he surrendered to the Hungarian and Croatian king Matijaš Korvin, who after his death would place Gacka and Otočac and a number of noble estates under his administration and form the territorial specialty of the Captaincy of Senj in an attempt to prevent the Ottoman invasion. Žikmund Frankopan (Sigismundus de Francapanibus) received Gacka and the towns of Otočac, Prozor, Dabar and Vrhovine in 1449 after the death of his father Ban Mikula (Nikola). He had his castle built in Otočac, of course outside the walls of the fortified city of Otočac and received a bishopric from Pope Pius II. With the acquisition of the diocese and his right to elect bishops, Zikmund undeniably increased his reputation not only among the brothers but also beyond. That is why he was generous in his gifts to the diocese. Since he died without male heirs, his estate was managed by his brother Martin Frankopan. The figure was made by the academic sculptor Gabriele Gottoli from Verona - Italy.
