Nikola Maštrović

Nikola Maštrović (1791–1851) – soldier, born in Makarska. In 1843 he assumed the post of brigadier of the Otočac Regiment. Even though Matrovi only spent a short period of time in Otoac (1843–1849), his charitable contributions to the area's poor inhabitants earned him the title of "father of the region" for that brief time. He managed the entire spiritual and economic development of the Gacka and Krbava regions as well as parts of Lika and Podgorje. He encouraged the development of education and the arrangement of schools in Otočac, he was a road builder, he tried to take care of the rational management of forests and watercourses, he advocated for building churches in places where there were none, and those built and neglected he tried to restore and supply with the necessary church inventory. During his time in the Otočac Regiment, not a single man died of hunger, he helped the weak and sick, he used his money to buy grain for the border guards in dire need in 1845 and 1846, he had a booklet printed at his own expense in 1845 called Knjiga gospodina oberstara Maštrovića svoijem Otočanom (The book of Mr. Oberstar Maštrović to his Otočan). Much earlier than in Zagreb, he established an acting troupe in Otočac at the start of 1844 that performed plays in the Croatian language. The figure was created by the academic sculptor Carlos Roberto Monge Sanchez from Mexico.
