Josip Barković

Josip Barković (1918– 2011) – writer, born in Otočac. He completed primary school and four grades of high school in Otočac, teacher school in Gospić and Karlovac. He entered the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Zagreb, but the war prevented him from completing his studies. Since 1945, he has been the editor of the informative and cultural programs of Radio Zagreb. He worked in the editorial office of the weekly Naprijed, and then he was the editor of the culture section of the same newspaper. He was the editor of the magazines Izvor and Krugovi and the editor-in-chief of the culture section of Vjesnik. From 1976 to 1978, he was the president of the Society of Croatian Writers. Barković is a prolific, engaged and self-effacing writer, known to a wide circle of literature lovers for his novels Sinovi slobode (Sons of Freedom) and Dolina djetinjstva (Valley of Childhood), but also for seven psychological novels with social themes and the fate of the individual, and six collections of short stories, among which is Zeleni dječak (Green Boy), intended for the youngest readers, and especially for his anthology story Jabuka (The Apple), without which it is difficult to imagine a solid anthology of contemporary Croatian prose. The figure was created by the academic sculptor Vincent di Vicenzo from Canada.
