Egon Matijević

Egon Matijević (1922–2016) – chemist, world-renowned scientist, born in Otočac (which he regularly mentions in his biographies). He attended high school in Osijek, finished his studies in Zagreb at the Faculty of Technology, where he received his doctorate in 1948. He started working at the Faculty of Science in Zagreb. In 1956, he went to Cambridge University, and then to Potsdam, USA, to Clarkson University, where he has remained working until his death. His scientific works mostly relate to colloidal particles, particles that are widely used today in the pharmaceutical industry, paper industry, detergents, artificial ceramic substances and other applications. Matijević's scientific opus amounts to about 500 works. He was awarded and won many awards, among which four honorary doctorates stand out. In 2002, the Egon Matijević prize for chemistry was established at Clarkson University. His activity in the circle of American intellectuals of Croatian origin for helping and recognizing Croatia as an independent state was noted. The figure was made by the academic sculptor Ivan Briski from Zagreb.
