THE LOCAL HISTORY

Gacka Museum located in the very centre of Otočac is a county museum holding rich historical, cultural, and traditional value to the people of the Gacka Valley.

Through the collection appropriately named "Gacka Throught History" one can trace the events from the Gacka Valley from prehistory, Romans, first mentions of the town, wars against the Turks, the Military Frontier, WW I and II, all the way to the period of the cultural development of the city, and it's suffering through the Homeland War of 1991.

The Archaeological 'Iapydic' Collection is presented in the material cultural values which consist of: jewelry, weapons, tools, kitchenware, life and work of the Illyrian tribe of Iapydes from the middle to late Bronze Age, i.e., from the 10th century BC to the arrival of the Romans at the end of the 1st century BC.

STOJAN ARALICA - THE ACADEMIC PAINTER

The Museum exhibits a particularly valuable Memorial Collection of the world-renowned Academic painter and colorist Stojan Aralica, who was born in Otočac.

The ethnographic collection reflects the traditional life and culture of the Gacka Valley throught the last hundred years by presenting exhibits which hold and represent the traditional culture characteristic of the area, such as tools used for the manufacture of textile products, pottery, as well as the male and female national costumes.
The Museum exhibits a particularly valuable Memorial Collection of the world-renowned Academic painter and colorist Stojan Aralica, who was born in Otočac. The exhibits include his oil paintings, ink based drawings, pencil and charcoal technique work, as well as his own personal items such as, documents, photographs, painting tools, and books.
The Homeland War Collection presents the light and heavy weaponry used in the war, as well as the remains of bomb shells, air-dropped bombs, different caliber bullets, etc. The collection also presents the chronology of the war developments with the pictures of damaged buildings and facilities.
